The Life-Changing Power of Scripture

the life changing power of scripture

We live in a uniquely loud time period. So many voices vie for our attention, offering advice on how to live well through books, podcasts, YouTube videos, and blogs (like this one, haha).

Amid this noise, knowing what is good, beautiful, and true becomes challenging. But God’s Word stands as our ultimate guide to truth, cutting through the noise and offering clarity for how to live the good life.

Now, let us examine how God’s Word transforms lives by exploring what Scripture says about its power and the implications for discipleship.

The Power of God’s Word to Create

From the very first chapter of the Bible, we learn that God created the heavens and the earth by the power of His word (Gen 1:1–3).

And as Hebrews 11:3 says:

“By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”

Since all creation has its source in God’s word, His word uniquely stands as the foundation of all truth.

The Power of God’s Word to Give New Life

God’s word is not just the cause of creation; it also brings about the new creation. This is to say, God’s word brings the spiritually dead to life in Christ.

We see an interesting foreshadowing of this in Ezekiel 37. The prophet Ezekiel is commanded to prophesy the word of the LORD over a valley of dry bones, declaring that the LORD would cause the bones to live. As he prophesied, the bones joined together, grew sinews and flesh, and—after some more prophesying—came to life (Ezek 37:7–10).

This foreshadows God’s plan to bring life to the spiritually dead as they hear God’s word proclaimed. As Paul says in Romans 10:17, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Thus, new life in Christ comes through hearing and trusting the truth proclaimed in Scripture.

Furthermore, even as we come to know the truth through Scripture, God must speak new life into the spiritually dead. By the power of God’s word, we are born again and come to new life in Christ (1 Pet 1:23). The one who spoke creation into being must open the eyes of our hearts to the knowledge of Christ (2 Cor 4:6).

The Power of God’s Word to Sanctify

The two previous sections speak of God’s word in a general sense. We do not have access to every word that God speaks in his acts of creation and new creation. But he has given us his Word (with a capital W) in a specific sense through Scripture.

Paul writes to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:16–17:
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

God’s written Word is the means that He has appointed for sanctifying His people in the present age (Jn 17:17). It is living and active, discerning of the deepest motives of our hearts (Heb 4:12), and uniquely able to guard us in the path of righteousness (Ps 119:9–11).

Implication for Discipleship: We Need God’s Word!

Paul exhorts in Romans 12:2:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

To understand what is good, we must be constantly renewed in God’s Word. As disciples of Jesus, we should seek to align our understanding of the world with God’s revelation in Scripture.

Because God’s word is powerful, we should aim to have the Word of Christ dwelling in us richly (Col 3:16). This is the call of a disciple: abide in God’s Word. In light of this, in the coming weeks, we will consider practical Bible-reading suggestions, common pitfalls, and how to memorize Scripture.

Conclusion

We’ve seen:

God’s word is powerful: by it all things were made, new life is given, and God’s people grow into his likeness. Therefore, disciples of Jesus abide in God’s Word.

Take time today to intentionally engage with God’s Word. Commit to regular Bible reading, reflection, and memorization. Let God’s Word guide your life and shape your discipleship journey. Start now and experience transformation through Scripture.
